Why do we even bother with book ratings?
I've talked about book ratings a lot in the past in short form, and (for me at least) I think it's a really interesting topic. Over the last year especially, I have seen more and more creators and book reviewers who have decided to move away from using or talking about star ratings.
This has popped up again recently as there has been a lot of discussion about book reviews being less popular in various forms of social media. Instead of doing in depth reviews, the trend is more and more towards lists and yes/no/maybe style reviews. This is especially interesting considering one of the arguments against star ratings was they reduce an artistic endeavor to a number, and yet now we're reducing them to a yes/no maybe.
So thinking about all this, I decided to do a video where I went in depth on star reviews - what is their history, why do people like them, why have some people gotten away from them, and where I stand on them and how I use them in the setting of my personal rating system. I also talk about some questions I've gotten over time, including whether I ever change ratios, and whether I rate a book I DNF.
So what do you think about star ratings - like them, dislike them, totally neutral?
