Everything You Wanted to Know About Our Book Club!

Welcome to the Doc of the Dark Arts Book Club! I started this off in January, and as time has gone on we have made some tweaks and made it so much fun! I say we because this is really driven by you, the members. And if you're seeing this and you're not a member of our Bindery community here, I'd love to have you along!

The video goes into detail about how the book club works, rules, and structure. But for those who like to read, here are the essentials:

  • I run the book club entirely out of Bindery and Discord, and to participate you do need to be a Bindery Member (free or paid - the paid tier does have some fun perks!).

  • We choose books three months at a time to give everyone equal opportunity to acquire the books in whatever way they want.

  • In Discord, I ask for book club proposals. Members propose books with the author, title, synopsis, any content/trigger warnings, and a description of why they think it would be good for the club. There is a period of open discussion, and I then choose the top 8-9 books based on a number of factors from those proposals. We then vote on them here by allowing all members to choose their top three choices. The top three overall vote getters are our book club books!

  • We read one book a month. On Discord, I have forum channels for each month's book broken into sections. As you read at your own pace, you pop in and out of those channels and chat about the book. It's that easy! We even have people chatting on prior month's reads!

  • At the end of each month, we have a live wrap up virtual discussion on Discord that is optional.

  • We only have a few rules: treat everyone with respect, all opinions are welcome and encouraged. No bullying, gatekeeping, or otherwise disrespectful behavior. You participate as much or as little as you want - no minimums. And the book club is and always will be free! I only ask participants to be free or paid Bindery members to ensure participants are the only ones voting. Finally, have fun and enjoy the discussion at your own pace!

We are reading Malice by John Gwynne in March, and voting for April -June is wrapping up (it's looking like Sword of Kaigen will be one, and it's a close race for 2nd and 3rd!If this sounds like your thing, sign up to be a member, and we'd love to see you here! Additionally, you should really join us on Discord as well, we have so many great discussions going, people are joining up for buddy reads, and it is such a wonderful, supportive community!
